We have almost finished moving our things from Oaklawn and it is only a matter of a few more days until it will no longer be in my family.
My son, Johnny, and I have discovered many things in the house that have not been seen in years, but are treasures to keep. I am sure that in years to come members of our family will wonder why in the world did they keep these things?
In the old smoke house high up on the rafters were sacks of bottle caps. When I was asked why these were kept, I explained that my Daddy had grown up in the depression and there was a shortage of metal. He would save the bottle caps from drinks that was sold in the store. The store yard was dirt back then and Daddy would put those bottle caps around the gas pumps so our customers would not have to stand in the mud.
This week I have spent a couple hours questioning our county judge and one of our commissioners, separately, about the Capital Improvement Project being presented.
As the Stormin’ Norman Band stood on the steps of Billiken’s Smokehouse at the Chimneys Saturday afternoon, they urged passersby to make their voices heard to the Fredericksburg City Council.
On Monday, the State College Borough Council approved a certificate of appropriateness as a part of its historical preservation process for 321 Fraternity Row, home of Zeta Beta Tau.Â
The certificate will allow the house owners to enclose the front patio of the property and provide handicap access via ramp.
The approved design meets the guidelines of the borough s historic preservation ordinance.Â
Additionally, the borough council approved needed funding for maintenance and repairs on local parking structures downtown, which will take place throughout 2021 and 2022.
It was also recommended that Concord Public Finance submit proposals for the $4 million borrowing needed for the project, and the refunding of $4.74 million.
